The Green Bridge Project has been developed by the City of Gold Coast and then delivered through a design and construct process.
The Green Bridge is a pedestrian and cycle bridge that will link the Gold Coast Cultural precinct to Surfers Paradise and more widely the Gold Coast via the Light Rail accessed through Chevron Island.
The Gold Coast Cultural Precinct is the outcome of a 2013 City of Gold Coast international design competition to deliver a visionary Master Plan to transition the former Gold Coast City Council administrative precinct to a Home of the Arts for the Gold Coast.
ARM Architecture in collaboration with Topotek1 won the competition and have since developed the 2014 Master Plan into a site wide master plan. City of Gold Coast have recently opened the Versatile Outdoor Space (VOS or Amphitheater) as Stage 1 (the young heart) of the Cultural Precinct.
Pedestrians and cyclists pass through a gateway threshold as they approach Gold Coast’s Home of the Arts Precinct. The ribbon like structure wraps around the bridge and continues on overhead to create a sense of welcome, identity and presence.
The artwork aims to form a point of arrival as an activated beacon within the precinct, celebrating the views over the lake towards to HOTA site.
The overall theme identified by the City of Gold Coast is “Water”, this is based upon the City of Gold Coast motto “Terra Fluminum et Oceani” meaning “Land of Rivers and Oceans”.
This theme celebrates the coast’s intimate relationship with:
• Integrated and surrounding water-bodies;
• sub-tropical storms;
• local natural ecosystems;
• the location of the South Landing between the Nerang River and the Precinct’s Lake Evandale.
The architects have used a Voronoi pattern throughout the scheme for the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct.
We drew a thematic, theoretic and mathematic connection to water and the Voronoi pattern through the use of a delauney pattern which is shown in the diagrams above.
