PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This artwork is inspired by the tactile local experience of the flavour of Fremantle. The soffit surface was create digitally via a cutting edge, innovative design process. The form is achieved through a unique form-finding process - using a physics based simulation software - to simulated the ‘Fremantle Doctor’ on a sail like surface, allowing for a unique, free flowing form to evolve.

Lighting is controlled by an anemometer that is located on the roof of the apartment complex. The lighting is a live representation of wind speeds driven by the data retried by the anemometer.

The use of computational design processes empowered us to create the otherwise unimaginable, through sophisticated generative and iterative workflows. We tested over 500 different design iterations of the simulation, and selected one outcome based on an aesthetic assessment of its fluid sculptural qualities.

From this digital model, we are able to evaluate and quantify the design outcome, whilst simultaneously preparing shop drawings as we continued to resolve the design right up until fabrication commenced.

Current digital fabrication technology allows for mass customisation, rather than mass production. The use of algorithmic design provides us with the opportunities to build complex forms with many unique joints and pieces. The artwork is being fabricated directly from the digital model, with each of the 2000+ pieces being labelled to facilitate placement on-site.
